A recessive mutant cell line, B7, which is partially responsive to both interferon (IFN)- a and IFN-g is described. B7 was FACS sorted from a cellular pool, which was obtained from the parental cell line 2C4, after several rounds of mutagenesis. The partial responsiveness to IFN was observed both in terms of expression of cell surface markers (CD2, class I and II HLAs) and mRNA expression of IFN-stimulated genes (9-27; 6-16; 2'-5' OAS; GBP and HLA-DRa). A genetic cross with the U4 mutant (JAK1-, a member of the Janus family of nonreceptor tyrosine kinase) did not restore full IFN-responsiveness to B7, and JAK1 cDNA transfection into B7 restored the wild phenotype of the cell... |

Electrophoretic analyses of peptidase-B were carried out on red cell hemolysates from Holstein, Mantiqueira and Gyr cattle, using cornstarch, known in Brazil as Penetrose-30. We describe a new peptidase-B allele, denoted Pep-B1, in Mantiqueira cattle, belonging to the Bos taurus group, which are the result of a cross of native cattle of Portuguese origin introduced in Brazil during colonial times (16th century) with Holstein and Caracu cattle. The genetic control of peptidase-B was determined by typing parents and progeny segregating for all three alleles, confirming that peptidase B is controlled by a single autosomal locus with three codominant alleles, denoted Pep-B1, Pep-B2 and Pep-B3 The use of the citrate-phosphate buffer system, at pH 5.9, on 14%... |

An alternative device for the immobilization of the hind limb of the rat was developed to study the effects of chronic disuse on the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles, maintained for 3 weeks in the shortening and the stretching positions, respectively. The proposed device is made of steel mesh and cotton materials, and has some advantages when compared to cast or plaster cast: it is cheaper, lighter (12 g or 4% of the body weight of the rat) and the same unit can be easily adjusted and used several times in the same animal or in animals of similar size. Immobilization is also useful to restrain the movements of the hip, knee, and ankle joints. Male rats (291 ± 35 g and aged 14 ± 2 weeks) were used to develop and test the model. The soleus muscle of 18... |

Aleiodes Wesmael is the most diverse rogadine genus, with koinobiont endoparasitic development in Lepidoptera caterpillars resulting in mummification of the host remains. Aleiodes japi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Type specimens of the new species were reared from Physocleora grosica and Ischnopteris sp. (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Ennominae) larvae. Host larvae were collected on Alchornea triplinervia (Euphorbiaceae) at the Reserva Biológica Municipal da Serra do Japi, Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil. This is the second species of circumscriptus/gastritror group described from Brazil. |

Abstract: In the present work, we synonymize Micropholis compta under M. gardneriana due to the overlap of morphoanatomical characters and the absence of distinctive attributes, verified during taxonomic and anatomical study of the genus Micropholis for Brazil. This study provides an updated description of M. gardneriana, including macro- and micro-morphological data, a distribution map, and comments on conservation status, ecological and taxonomy. |
